Pretend Play with Infants and Toddlers
By: Wendy Tarvin

What is pretend play?
Pretend play is one of the ways that young children come to understand the world around them. As infants become increasingly aware of the world around them, they begin to imitate what they see. When toddlers engage in pretend play, they use symbols and make believe to replay events or actions they have observed and experienced. In this complex type of play, children carry out action plans, take on roles, and transform objects as they express their ideas and feelings about the social world.

What do young children learn through pretend play?

How do I initiate pretend play within my classroom?
Children engage in imitation and pretend play naturally; however they will not develop high level dramatic play skills unless adults encourage this type of activity. Adults can do this by:

  1. Creating an environment that promotes exploration by supplying ample age appropriate materials and a special place for children to pretend play.

  2. Promoting pretend play opportunities during daily activities and routines.
  3. Naming and telling young infants what they are looking at or playing with.
  4. Acting out a story by using props and encouraging the children to imitate your actions.
  5. Building relationships with children. It is important to keep in mind that of all the elements in the environment, you and your relationship with each child are the most important. Your role is to be a good observer and a willing partner.

How do I become an enthusiastic participant in child's play?
